In 4 nights, 250 drunk drivers busted in Delhi

At least 250 people have been caught driving drunk in the first four days of the “late-night vigil” launched by the traffic police last weekend. Most of the drivers were nabbed from areas around popular pubs. Over the last one year, HT has been writing how 50% of accident deaths in the city occur between 11pm and 7am — a time when the police presence is thin. Most of fatalities are caused by drunk drivers and speeding.

“We have cracked down heavily on drunk drivers and those speeding late in the night,” said Sudhir Yadav, special commissioner of police (traffic).

Launched on July 7, the "night vigil" netted 2,846 violators in four days, 248 of them were driving drunk, which invites a fine of Rs. 2,000. The errant drivers also included stunt bikers, triple riders on bikes and speed-limit violators, Yadav said. As many as 43 vehicles have been impounded.

The vigil begins after 9pm and goes on till early hours. Teams of two-three police personnel drive around busy roads to check violations.

On an average, 47-odd people are acted against in a day for driving drunk. The figure for the night drill is higher — 62.

"We will continue with the vigil and will equip our teams with gadgets such as passive alcometers and night-speed interceptors," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
