100-day walkathon for professionals

A fitness company has invited professional organisations across India to enroll their employees for a 100-day competition where participants will be encouraged to walk as much as they can. The company has roped in Asian Heart Institute (AHI), Bandra-Kurla Complex, to study the effects of the physical activity on people enrolled in the competition.

The event, organised by Mumbai-based Stepathlon Lifestyle Private Limited (SLPL), will begin on September 10. So far, about 18 companies have registered for the event. A company has to pay Rs. 2,250 per participant.

In 2010, Stepathlon had conducted a similar event in Australia with more than 1.3 lakh participants. Each participant is given a pedometer, to measure how many steps they take. Each participant is encouraged to walk at least 10,000 steps a day to stay fit.

"Next year, we want to include families and youth," said Shane Bilsborough, chief operating officer, SLPL. The AHI will select 500 for its study and record lipid profiles, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and body mass index before and after the study.
