UP plays green card, woos ONGC

Keen to promote eco-tourism in the state, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav is roping in big corporate houses and leading public sector companies to invest in setting up natural parks, safari parks and green zones. Confirming the move, a senior bureaucrat in Akhilesh’s government told HT that the chief minister has already written to the oil minister Jaipal Reddy over involving Oil and Natural gas Corp (ONGC) to collaborate and co-operate with the state government in setting up of such projects.

“Setting up an institution of sustainable development in the state, promotion of bio mass and solar energy-based renewable energy projects, developing clean development mechanism (CDM) projects, promoting forestation in the state besides conserving, promoting and developing every type of bio diversity projects, including natural parks, safari parks and green zone projects have been offered to ONGC,” the letter said.

Inviting Reddy to visit Uttar Pradesh, Yadav sought oil and natural gas corp’s collaboration in agriculture, education, health, infrastructure and social welfare.

“ONGC, India’s largest navratna company, is promoting multitude of activities in the areas of overall sustainable development,” Akhilesh Yadav told Reddy in a recent letter. “UP government is keen to promote, participate and patronise such projects and the ONGC’s activities in our state.”

“I would like to invite you along with your team, the petroleum secretary, CMD ONGC to discuss and explore the possibilities,” the letter further said.
